Our History

The Federal Palace Hotel is thought to be built around 1903 as there are no records prior to this time. On March 24th 1924, a fire destroyed the Federal Palace Hotel as well as a dressmakers shop, a bakehouse and a restaurant known as 'Richmond Refreshments Rooms'.  The hotel was completely destroyed with the exception of a detached sample room located at the back of the hotel. The Sample Room was separate from the main bar where travelling salesmen used to give samples of goods to potential customers. After the fire, the Sample Room was set up as a temporary bar. The cause of the fire was never determined. The Federal Palace Hotel was rebuilt and altered over the years so that the hotel remains much the same as it was when it was rebuilt. A local identity remembers outback rodeos held on the hotel grounds during the 1930s and 1940s.
